(Brussels) MEP Ana GOMES (S&D, PT) asked President Jacob Zuma of South Africa today, during a meeting of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament, to help liberate Birtukan Mideksa, a young woman leader of the main opposition party in her country, Ethiopia, who has been jailed for life and whom Amnesty International considers to be a “prisoner of conscience”.
The South African Head of State admitted to not knowing the case in particular, but assured the European Parliament that “if she was jailed unfairly, South Africa would certainly be willing to use its influence” and press for her release.
Ana Gomes asked President Zuma and South Africa to show solidarity towards Ms. Mideksa, who the people of Ethiopia consider the “Ethiopian Nelson Mandela”. The Portuguese Socialist MEP evoked Nelson Mandela and his inspiring fight for freedom, stating that “he is not just a hero of South Africans, he is a hero for Mankind”, and recalled how world solidarity was important to return Nelson Mandela to freedom. “Will South Africa now show solidarity to get the release of this brave, young African woman imprisoned for life in Ethiopia, the country that hosts the headquarters of the African Union?”, directed Ana Gomes to President Zuma.
Together with MEP Marita ULVSKOG (S&D, SE), Ana Gomes proposed Birtukan Mideksa for the Sakharov Prize 2010. During the last plenary session in Strasbourg, the nomination of the Ethiopian political prisoner won the endorsement of the Socialists & Democrats Group for the European Parliament’s prestigious Human Rights annual award.

just I want to give you a little words because i know you are working for good for Ethiopia, you post this thing for a long time.I feel it you will be regret oneday.
but'nobody knows these mischievious people.Bihanu and birtukan with their small group are working for their Ego.I know them very well.They speek in the name of democracy,but
their foundation is to be at the top of Ethiopian people to liberate Oromia,That is why Mideqesas daughter is there.And
to bring the reign of Guragau as /minority over majority/like Tigreans.The tangable evidence is
that he sign with OLF and open an office in Eritrea.So the freidship
OF ANDINET/Ginbot 7/ with OLFisthe same as Shabia and TLF to liberate Ertrea.they have a special haterare for Amhara. I'm sorry to say it because it is true.look how they lower down the strugle of Ethiopian people for their unity.
I think everbody didnot understand that they are working for the bad side of Ethiopia more than Meles.
I'm in doubt that those who are joging with them like Tamagne,I know after he used him he will throw him away and
others have to know it all in detail everybody the diaspora or back home has to be aware of it and go for new strategy or types of poletica that can hold all the ethiopian people and thier unity and democracy.My opinion is, it will not working to play with the l
previous parties.it is better to come out all the people and participate equaly and form a new government like Tunisia and Libiya.
Don't you think Abeba!!I'm sorry I just share you my idea otherwise if Birhanu's group is going to get a chance over ruling the ethiopian people ,that poor people is waiting for another 25 years suffering,and, the flame will be as many times as Meles's cruility.
